Dr. Watson was born and raised in Florence, SC. He attended Clemson University where he graduated magna cum laude from the Calhoun Honors College with a degree in Chemistry and Health Sciences. He was then accepted into the US Army’s Health Profession Scholarship Program (HPSP) and went on to receive his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC in 2004. He completed his internal medicine residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI in 2007, then he completed a Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC in 2011.
Dr. Watson served on Active Duty in the Army for 11 years. During that time, he served overseas in both Iraq (2007-8) and Afghanistan (2013), where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He was formerly the Chief of the Gastroenterology Clinic at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, GA from 2011-2015 before joining Lowcountry Gastroenterology Associates in Mount Pleasant, SC in August 2015. He still proudly serves in the Army Reserves and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in June 2017.
Dr. Watson is board certified in Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Internal Medicine. His special interests include colon cancer prevention, esophageal cancer screening, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, inflammatory bowel disease, Hepatitis C treatment, hemorrhoid treatment, and health & nutrition.
Dr. Watson strives to treat every patient as he would want his own family to be treated. This strong desire derives from his abiding faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He knows that every patient is unique and may have different ideas about how to best manage his or her healthcare needs. Therefore, a trusting, close doctor-patient relationship is what he hopes to develop with every patient in order to have a mutual respect and understanding regarding each patient’s medical care. His goal is to meet patients where they are to provide the best possible solutions to their digestive health needs because, without “buy-in” from the patient, no plan will succeed.
On a personal level, Dr. Watson is married to his medical school sweetheart, Theresa, and they have four beautiful children. In his free time, he enjoys running, cycling (or anything outdoors), reading, Bible study, and mentoring medical students.
